The Australian Federation of Credit Union Leagues (AFCUL) was formed in Sydney on 7 May 1966 to provide a national voice for the Credit Union Movement in Australia. Early tasks of AFCUL included assisting various states to prepare Credit Union Legislation; creating a National Registry of Credit Unions; working towards the spread of payroll deductions for credit union loans and deposits and for the inclusion of credit unions in Home Savings Grants. The New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australian and Tasmanian associations joined in 1966. Victorian, South Australian and ACT associations joined in 1967. In 1980, the name was changed to the Australian Federation of Credit Unions Ltd. AFCUL and the various state peak bodies were wound up with the institution of Cuscal in 1992.
