The Association of Central Credit Unions (ACCU) was a breakaway peak body representing NSW credit unions who were dissatisfied with the administration of the NSW Credit Union League (later the Association of NSW Credit Unions). The dissenting credit unions were not a fringe group. For example, in 1977 there were 400 credit unions in NSW and the ACCU represented 47 of them. There were other associations for dissenting credit unions grouped in geographic areas, most significantly the Association of Newcastle & District Credit Unions and the Association of Southern Credit Unions.

The biggest disagreements with the NSW Credit Union League were probably over fees for membership and insurance. By 1982, most NSW credit unions had decided to join the newly named Association of NSW Credit Unions.
