The Australian Credit Union Foundation (ACUF) was established by a Trust Deed with the Australian Federation of Credit Union Leagues (AFCUL) on 4 July 1971. The first trustees were elected at an AFCUL Annual General Meeting. It became a registered non-government aid agency whose aim was to establish viable credit unions for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people of Australia and in the Asia Pacific area.

In 1984 the ACUF name was changed to the Foundation of International Credit Union Development and later the Credit Union Foundation of Australia (CUFA later Cufa). In 2016, the Australian Mutuals Foundation (AMF) was registered by Australian Mutual Bank. The primary purpose of the AMF is to provide a vehicle for mutual banks, credit unions, building societies and cooperative banking to assist needy children in Australia, and to alleviate poverty in some of the poorest communities in South East Asia and the Pacific by the creation of sustainable cooperative financial organisations. The boards of the AMF and Cufa agreed to merge in early 2026. From April 1, 2026 the joint organisation will be known as AMF - Cufa.
