Alex Sala
Here is another 1990s video from the Association of NSW Credit Unions (ANSWCU). This time we have a short interview with Alex Sala recorded around 12 months before his work on Cuscal’s inaugural board officially began. Alex was on the Project Renewal committee which led to the formation of Cuscal.
The interview takes place in front of a sign for the Credit Union Savings Reserve Board – New South Wales and much of the discussion includes Sala’s involvement with ANSWCU’s Savings Protection Fund in the 1970s and it’s bailing out of Communication Credit Union (subsequently Endeavour Credit Union), a credit union he led from 1977-2000.
He then goes on to discuss his plans as a Director of Cuscal, noting the transition from the state based federated credit union movement to the centralised Cuscal era. He also talks about the record growth of credit unions at the time and the importance that centralised banking has played for the success of the Australian credit union movement.
Alex Sala was born in Mozambique, Africa and came to Australia when he was 18. His first role in credit unions was with ANSWCU before working with Communication Credit Union. He was the inaugural board Chair of TransAction Solutions and was the Chair of CUFSS from 2008-2012.
