John Gormley

Today we have a short interview with John Gormley of Sydney County Council Credit Union (today Australian Mutual Bank) recorded by the Association of NSW Credit Unions (ANSWCU) in 1990.

John is asked about his involvement in Sydney County Council Credit Union where he attended the formation meeting in 1963 and where he initially deposited 5 shillings a week, before sitting on the credit union’s audit committee.

The interview also covers John’s involvement with ANSWCU which began with his standing on the Supervisory Committee and eventually the ANSWCU board. They go on to discuss historical developments such as the introduction of the Savings Protection Fund for NSW credit unions which John says, “created a split in the movement”, but which eventually led to a government guarantee of member savings.
