1992 - Current
Cuscal was formed in 1992, following the industry-wide reform known as Project Renewal, which began in 1988. Cuscal (initially standing for Credit Union Services Corporation Australia Limited) was formed as an amalgam of the Australian Federation of Credit Unions Ltd (AFCUL) and the state credit union peak bodies. This consolidation was necessary in the new national regulatory environment.

In its early years Cuscal provided both payments infrastructure and advocacy for the sector. While advocacy is now led by COBA, Cuscal continues to deliver secure, scalable payments and regulated data services across Australia.

Our Cuscal collection is extensive. It begins with reports and correspondence from various organisations during Project Renewal to many documents and reports from its first decade. We also hold many Cuscal produced videos from the 1990s and 2000s and countless photographs from promotional shoots, conventions and conferences.
