What we know today as Gateway Bank was formed when seventeen employees of the Commonwealth Bank and the Reserve Bank met in a basement after work in 1954. Employees of these banks were unable by law to borrow from the Commonwealth Bank except for housing and these workers needed smaller loans at the time. The credit union was formed via the Commonwealth Bank Officers’ Association (CBOA) and for many years was known as CBOA Credit Union Co-operative until it broadened its bond and became Gateway Credit Union in 1998. It became a mutual bank known as Gateway Bank in 2018.

Our collection of Gateway Bank records includes annual reports from 1961 onwards, the published history, A Mutual Way - Fifty Years of Gateway Credit Union, an oral history, newsletters and contemporary governance documents and reports published online.
