The Electricity Industry Credit Unions Association was formed in late 1969 following the suggestion of George Washington, General Manager of the Sydney County Council. Representatives from the Electricity Commission; Prospect County Council; Mackellar County Council and St George County Council attended the first meetings at the invitation of the Sydney County Council Employees' Credit Union. The objectives of the association were to encourage the establishment of credit unions for the benefit of members employed in the electricity generation and distribution industries or local government services and for the exchange of information between credit unions that belonged to the association.

By March 1977 the association was re-named The Electricity Industry & Local Government Credit Unions' Association. It is unclear exactly when this change occurred. In 1978 the first written annual report was published by which time there were 20 member credit unions representing 60,185 members and total funds of $68 million. In 1983 the association began to 'look seriously at the Association's continuing relevance’ and it was wound up in 1984.
