Archives Tour with Tom Kelly

To begin the new year, we’re taking you back 30 years for a video tour of the Australian Credit Union Archives, as it was then known, with Secretary/Manager Tom Kelly.

In the video Tom takes viewers through the Archives’ premises at 59 Buckingham St, Surry Hills, where the office is still located though the expanded collection has mostly moved offsite and much audio-visual material has been digitised. In fact, some of the records that Tom points out, e.g. oral history tapes, have been completely digitised.

Seen in the office with Tom is an administrator and volunteers Lee Nash and Clarrie Murphy, pioneers of the Australian credit union movement in their own right. As for Tom, the Archives published a pamphlet on his life and achievements. Read it online here.

Finally, take note of the co-operative flag or “rainbow flag” hanging on the wall. The rainbow flag was adopted by the International Co-operative Alliance in 1925. Today, most people associate the rainbow flag with the LGBT movement which adopted the flag in 1978, however there have been many slightly different rainbow flags created representing many peoples and movements.
