Newcastle Permanent was founded as a Starr-Bowkett Society in the Newcastle suburb of Wickham on 2 February 1903. It was converted to a permanent building society in 1939. It opened its first branch in the 1960s. It installed its first ATM in 1984 and began internet banking in 2001. In 2023 Newcastle Permanent merged with Greater Bank forming the Newcastle Greater Mutual Group Ltd, trading as the NGM Group.
