The Illawarra Mutual Building Society was established in 1880 in Wollongong, NSW by a small group of Wollongong locals aiming to fund the building of one another's homes. By 2009 IMB consisted of a network of 44 branches in the ACT, NSW (particularly the South Coast and Illawarra regions and metropolitan Sydney) and a single branch at Glen Waverley, Victoria. In 2015, IMB Mutual Building Society became IMB Bank. On 4 May 2020, the smaller Hunter United Employees' Credit Union merged with the far larger Wollongong-based customer-owned IMB Bank.
